Content literacy is
a mental and social practice
involving the ability and desire to read, comprehend, critique and write about
multiple forms of print. These multiple forms of print include textbooks,
novels, magazines, Internet materials and other systems that pass on
information, emotional content, and ideas to be considered from a serious
standpoint." Content Literacy is the ability to use
reading and writing to learn new information in a “class”. It is about the
skills, how you learned (the facts), not about what you learned.
Within each course, there are certain things that must be learned. The course content is the most basic and well known reason why students go to school, so they can perform mathematics, write papers, understand history, and explain the fundamentals of science. These are shown in numerous ways: through presentations, in research papers, and generally in the final outcome at the end of the project. When someone is literate in content they understand what is taught and are able to display their understanding through whatever means are required or would be most effective.
